The Halifax Summer Opera Festival and Halifax Central Library present Tell me the truth about love: a musical evening with W.H. Auden

Every year the Halifax Summer Opera Festival and the Halifax Central Library present an exploration of the relationship between composers and a featured poet. Of all the great modern poets who have kept alive the ancient alliance between poetry and singing, there was no one to beat English poet W. H. Auden. No surprise, then, that Auden's poetic career should be one long effort to get his writing as close as could be to the condition of music. He poured out songs, ballads and lullabies.

Auden doted on opera, too. Opera's plots might be daft, he said, but it tells the truth about love. Among the many composers he collaborated with, his work with operatic master Benjamin Britten stands out.  Britten and Auden are two gay icons of twentieth century British creativity, and our evening will present the poetry of W.H. Auden, including his musical collaboration of the 1930's with Britten: Cabaret Songs.
